Factors affecting "Braeburn browning disorder".

The incidence of Braeburn browning disorder (BBD) and internal cavities (IC) in Braeburn apples harvested in British Columbia, Canada and subjected to various storage treatments was investigated in 1993-96. In most cases, incidences were low (<3% BBD and <4% IC) in fruits stored at 0 deg C in air for 6 months. Storage in a controlled atmosphere of 1.2-1.5% O2 + 1.0-1.2% CO2 increased both BBD and IC compared with air storage, following cool growing seasons. Incidences varied greatly with orchard and season. Delaying harvest increased BBD and IC in controlled atmosphere (CA)-stored fruits. In some cases, wax coatings increased BBD, but not IC incidence. CA storage at 1.7 or 3.0 deg C as opposed to 0 deg C had no consistent effect on BBD or IC.
