Necrosis of barley grains, the germination and fungi isolated from grains.

During 1993-97, an assessment of diseases of barley grain was carried out in the Czech Republic. Disease symptoms on grains included black-point, dark necrosis, black moulds, Fusarium moulds and deformations. No correlation could be determined between rainfall and disease incidence. Isolation of fungi from diseased grains revealed that black-point disease (the most common disease) was associated with Alternaria and Bipolaris sorokiniana [Cochliobolus sativus]. Alternaria dominated during higher rainfall whereas C. sativus was more common during drier weather. The presence of Alternaria spp. or C. sativus did not affect germination of barley grains. Other fungi which were commonly isolated included Cladosporium spp., Epicoccum purpurascens [E. nigrum] and Fusarium spp. Species of Fusarium which were most commonly isolated were F. graminearum [Gibberella zeae], F. avenaceum [G. avenacea] and F. sporotrichioides. High levels of Fusarium infection resulted in a decrease in germination.
