An analysis of the state of the potato market during 1998.

Russia's potato production decreased in 1998 from that in 1997. A smaller growing area and unfavourable weather reduced the total crop by 15.6% to 31.3 million tonnes. The main reduction was on corporate farms, but subsidiary holdings, now the principal growers, were also affected. Production was concentrated in the Central, Ural, Volgo-Vyatka, Central Chernozem, and Western Siberian regions. The volume of sales was generally the same as the previous year, although the August financial crisis led to increased demand for cheaper produce such as potatoes, and this caused a 19% rise in sales in September compared with the previous year. Less potatoes were sold through procurement organisations than on the market. There was an increase in demand for potatoes as stockfeed; this was noticeable particularly in the subsidiary sector which had fewer potatoes to sell. There was a general upward trend in ex-farm, wholesale, and retail prices during the year. The August financial crisis increased demand and

prices but there was nevertheless the usual reduction postharvest. Demand for cheaper products, including potatoes, is expected to be maintained in 1999.
