Low ethylene and rapid CA storage of 'Gala' apples.

The possibility of prolonging the storage period for Gala apples from 6 to 8 months was studied. Fruits were stored for 8.5 months (1995) and 8 months (1996) in low-O2 controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (3% CO2 + 1% O2) at 1 deg C with or without ethylene removal. Fruits were stored within 24 h of harvest. In the rapid CA treatment, pulldown was done after chamber closing and fruits reached 1 deg C after 12 h. In regular CA, fruits were cooled from 18 deg C to 1 deg C over 9 days and then pulldown was done simulating the procedure of commercial stores. In both years, after storage plus 7 days shelf-life, fruits from rapid CA and low ethylene storage were significantly firmer (66.6-68.9 N) than fruits from rapid CA storage without ethylene removal (58.4-61.8 N). Fruits from low ethylene storage were crisp and juicy with greener ground colour and excellent appearance and taste. Fruits in regular CA (slow cooling and retarded pulldown) had low firmness (46.3 N) and and the incidence of rotting a

nd breakdown was high. The results indicate that Gala apples can be stored for 8 months in low-O2 CA storage with ethylene scrubbing and with rapid establishment of CA conditions.
