Effects of 13 years soil fertilisation on storage quality of 'Cortland' apples.

Cortland apple fruits were harvested over 4 seasons (1991-1994) from trees planted in 1979 on a grey brown soil supplied since 1982 with 9 combinations of N (60 or 120 kg/ha), P (80 kg/ha), K (160 kg/ha) and/or Mg (120 kg/ha). The fruits were analysed at harvest and after storage for 5 months in air at 2-3 deg C. Data are tabulated on the effects of treatments on K:Ca ratios in fruits, fruit colour, fruit weight, soluble solids content and firmness at harvest, on percentage decay, physiological disorders and weight loss after storage, and on total losses at the end of storage. The results indicate that high fertilizer rates (particularly N + K) decrease fruit quality and increase losses during storage. P had no effect percentage decay. The incidence of physiological disorders was strongly correlated with the K:Ca ratio, with significant increases occurring when the ratio was above 24.
