Influence of plastic films and temperature on postharvest pericarp browning in litchi (Litchi chinensis).

This work investigated the influence of low density polyethylene, PVC and temperature (27 or 5 deg C) on fresh weight loss and browning of litchi cv. Brewster fruits. Regardless of temperature low density polyethylene film (not perforated) had the lowest water loss throughout storage, but at 5 deg C there was water condensation in the internal face of the film. On the other hand, PVC effectively reduced fresh weight loss, without the inconvenience of water condensation. Except for the control fruits (unwrapped), storage at 5 deg C reduced pericarp browning, with best results in the PVC treatment, which delayed browning for 36 days after harvest. At storage at 27 deg C, perforated low density polyethylene and PVC were able to reduce the rate of browning compared to the control treatment, with 15.6% and 5% incidence of dark fruits 8 days after harvest.
