Agronomic behaviour and postharvest response to cold storage of Malvasio mandarin fruits.

The agronomic and postharvest behaviour of Malvasio mandarins grown in Sardinia, Italy, was studied with a view to its introduction in commercial orchards as a late ripening mandarin. Changes in quality parameters of fruits from the beginning of January to the beginning of June were assessed at monthly intervals over a period of 3 years. The potential storage life of the fruits harvested late in the season was also studied. Fruits were stored after harvest for 1, 2 or 3 months at 4 or 8 deg C and 90% RH then transferred for one week of simulated marketing conditions to 20 deg C and 70-75% RH. Fruits were analysed, and appearance, chilling injury and decay were visually assessed. Physical and chemical characteristics underwent few changes from January to June, and until the beginning of June, internal quality was always good. Fruits were very resistant to chilling injury and not affected by the typical physiological disorders common to most mandarins. However, weight losses altered the aesthetic

aspect, as is usual for other mandarin cultivars. The few chemical parameter changes did not reduce the internal quality of the fruits over the storage period. It was concluded that Malvasio mandarin shows good agronomic traits, good quality parameters and excellent behaviour in cold storage which makes it available for a period of 8 months on the market, just when the production of mandarins in Italy is very poor.
