Dynamic behaviour analysis of sugarbeet: laboratory tests and development of an electronic beet.

During the mechanical harvesting of sugarbeet and postharvest operations the dynamic interactions between the mechanical equipment and roots affects the quality of the product either in terms of damage (breakage and bruises) or cleanliness (dirty tare). Such aspects are influenced by the type of impacts (peak acceleration, velocity change and impact duration). The phenomenon have been analysed with the development of an electronic beet that simulates the behaviour of a real root. The calibration of the electronic beet was performed through a series of comparative tests with a sample of beets subjected to different types of impacts, both on a rigid steel surface and on other roots. To keep measures reproducible, a pendulum was used to deliver impacts to a beet fixed to a rigid surface. Given the viscoelastic behaviour of the sugarbeet, velocity change appears to be the quantity that best quantifies the impacts that occur during product flow. The calibration curve enables calculation of the veloci

ty change for a root vs. the velocity change measured using the electronic beet under the same conditions.
