Postharvest handling and environmental factors influencing mango fruit quality - a review.

The mango is an important crop grown in many tropical and sub-tropical regions in the world. International trade in mango has increased markedly during the last decade, and demand for both fresh fruit and processed mango-based products is predicted to increase steadily. Mango is a highly perishable crop and this is exacerbated by exposure of fruit to the high ambient conditions common in most producing regions. Despite considerable progress in fruit production practices, several factors related to fruit physiology and/or lack of appropriate postharvest techniques still preclude many mango producing countries from participating in the growing world export market due to inadequate fruit quality standards. The objectives of this paper are to review the current handling, storage and treatment techniques for mangoes, including strategies for controlling postharvest diseases and physiological disorders. The physical and biochemical indices of fruit maturity, ripening and senescence are also examined.
