Postharvest technology for small-scale produce marketers: economic opportunities, quality and food safety.

Recommendations for harvesting, handling, storing, processing and marketing a wide variety of crops handled under a variety of conditions in small-scale horticultural operations in California, other US states and other countries are provided, with particular reference to postharvest loss reduction, maintenance of quality and value, and protection of food safety at reasonable cost. The 20 chapters are arranged in 3 parts, covering fresh handling technologies, small-scale processing technologies and small-scale marketing strategies. Four appendices include information on assessing postharvest losses, recommended temperature and RH conditions for storage of selected horticultural produce, MAP recommendations and requirements for selected commodities, and contact information for suppliers of small-scale postharvest technology, tools, equipment and supplies.
