Bent-neck inhibition in cut rose with fungicides.

The effects of fungicides on bent-neck (associated with Aeromonas hydrophila and Klebsiella oxytoca) of cut Rosa hybrida cultivars Mary de Vor and Norena were investigated at 3 bud development stages. These were: (1) bud tightly closed; (2) calyx separated from petals and petals beginning to open; and (3) calyx fully open and 2-3 petals open. Metalaxyl, myclobutanil, triflumizole and vinclozolin were tested at 100, 120, 200 and 200 mg/litre, respectively. In Norena, all the fungicides reduced bent-neck at stage 2. Treatment with fungicides for 4 h increased flower diameter, fresh weight and water uptake, and prolonged vase life. The percentage of bent-neck differed according to the cultivar and bud stage. In Mary de Vor, the percentage bent-neck was higher in young buds than in old buds. In Norena, bent-neck occurred excessively at all bud stages. The best treatment for inhibition of bent-neck in both cultivars was 120 mg myclobutanil/litre for 4 h at stage 2 of bud development.
