Storage diseases of apple: in the orchard or in storage.

Varietal characteristics of apple fruit, especially susceptibility to rot diseases, are important in storage diseases. Traditional varieties of the Nord Pas-de-Calais area (Colapuis, Cabarett and Reinette de Flandres), which differ in their storage characteristics, were compared in a collaborative programme with the Centre Regional de Resources Genetiques. Epidemiological studies were performed in the orchard and in the storage room. They showed the presence of an abundant fungal flora, the main species of which were Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria sp. and Penicillium expansum with no significant differences between resistant and susceptible varieties. Qualitative and quantitative changes were observed in the composition of the cuticle of apples, which is the first barrier that pathogens have to challenge. Resistant varieties had high levels of very long-chain saturated fatty acids in their epicuticular waxes. It is concluded that the biosynthesis of cuticle waxes and its role in the defence agains

t fungal pathogens need to be elucidated.
