Protection of grape berries from post-harvest rot by field application of fungicides.

Infection frequency by B. cinerea was determined in young and mature grape berries harvested from a vine yard. The fungus was isolated at a high frequency from flower petals, fruits of young clusters and the peduncle and perianth, but rarely from the pericarp, of mature clusters. All the young rotten berries in the field were infected by the fungus. It was also detected in seeds in some mature fruits. These results suggested that berry rot during storage most probably originated from field infection of the fruits by the fungus. The effect of field application of fungicides on storage rot was determined. A spray of iprodione, at the recommended concentration 65 days before harvest, gave effectively control of berry rot in the field as well as controlling post-harvest deterioration during 2 months of storage.
