Modified atmosphere storage of stone fruits.

The response of sweet cherries, nectarines and plums to Xtend, a plastic film which creates high internal CO2 atmospheres, was tested. The concentration of CO2 and O2 could be modulated by microperforations. Bing cherries were successfully stored for 2 months at 0 deg C in Xtend. The gas concentration stabilized within 4 days and remained at 7.5% CO2 and 16% O2 for 2 months. The main benefit of the Xtend film on cherry quality was reduction of weight loss and maintenance of green stems on the fruit. Chinook cherries were also stored successfully for a shorter period of time. Comparison of polyethylene film and Xtend in Chinook cherries showed that green stems were maintained better in the Xtend film than in polyethylene bags. Fairlane nectarines were stored in polyethylene or Xtend bags for 5 weeks. Fruits from Xtend bags had fewer physiological and pathological problems than either control fruits or those stored in polyethylene bags. Casselman plums were also stored in Xtend bags, but did not b

enefit from this storage. Both nectarines and plums did not develop high CO2 concentrations in the Xtend bags, and improving this may enhance the response of these fruits to modified atmospheres.
