R & D inputs to coconut and cashew processing by the National Engineering Research & Development Centre of Sri Lanka.

The National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERDC), Sri Lanka, has recently been undertaking R&D work on developing postharvest implements for both the coconut and cashew industries. Most of the traditional methods, techniques and implements used in processing coconut and cashew needed reevaluation regarding their efficiency, output quality of product, operator friendliness and maintainability due to the competitive environment emerging internationally in these industries. Productivity and quality have been key factors in developing new systems. Accordingly, the NERDC, as a stepping stone to technological R&D in these industries, undertook to develop a suitable coconut dehusker and a cashew kernel drier. The attempt was successful in developing a manually, operated mechanical coconut de-husker and an electrically operated cabinet type, cashew kernel drier. This paper presents the work done by the Centre in developing these systems.
