Fungi damaging garlic bulbs (Allium sativum L.) during storage.

The fungi colonizing garlic bulbs under field conditions in Poland, which later caused storage decay, were investigated. Fungi were isolated from bulbs stored at 2-8 deg , 4 deg C and -10-24 deg C for 3, 6 and 9 months. Fungi were isolated from the bulbs of all ecotypes, independent of time and storage conditions. Among them were some species which had previously been isolated from the roots and bulbs before storage. Penicillium spp. was isolated the most frequently. P. viridicatum had started to colonize the underground parts of garlic in field cultivation, and was also common in garlic tissues during storage. The majority of local garlic ecotypes in south-east Poland were susceptible to storage decay by fungi. The bulbs of ecotypes A and B were the most strongly affected, independent of the manner and time of storage. However, the smallest index of infection was observed in bulbs of all ecotypes stored at 4 deg . Bulb health depended on the conditions of storage and on fungal colonization of i

nitial material designed for storage.
