3D finite element model generation of fruits based on image processing.

The finite element method (FEM) is commonly used for a wide variety of agricultural engineering problems, e.g. heat and moisture transfer, and analysis of deformation. Commercial finite element analysis software and computing devices are now powerful enough to handle objects with complex shapes. The first step in the FEM is to construct a geometric model of the agricultural object to be analysed. This model must be defined manually, which is complicated because of the complex shape of most agricultural products. An image processing system, based on machine vision generating 3D geometric models of agricultural products such as apples and pears, is described. The procedure is illustrated by a model analysis example.
