Technical aspects of pear growing in Chile.

Pear production in Chile increased markedly between 1984 and 1994 when the area under cultivation reached 17 000 ha. This rapid increase has led to problems resulting in more than 30% of the export production being discarded because of poor quality. The problems discussed are: poor geographical distribution of cultivars; low yields due to biennial bearing, fruit drop, low precocity, russeting, poor pollination; severe winter pruning combined with excessive N fertilization; poor fruit quality such as bruising and sunburn; rootstock incompatibility; poor postharvest quality; problems in marketing such as low international prices and excess fruit. All this has lead to low profitability which has not been helped by a lack of local research to overcome these problems.
