Application of nitrogen in production and post-production systems of agriculture and its effect on environment in India.

A rapid increase in agricultural production (grain) in India is possible only by increasing the application of chemical fertilizers. Over 9 million tonnes of N are used annually for crop production in India, but there is still a great shortage of N to meet crop requirements, hence the gap between demand and supply is very high. Nitrogen is also used in postharvest processing, mainly for food preservation, and this is expected to increase in the near future. The application of N for various purposes is increasing without adverse effects on the environment being realised. An attempt to present the status of N application in crop production and food preservation in India is made. Scientific research carried out on food preservation with application of N is also described. The future demand for N in these activities is highlighted. The effect of N on the environment and measures to overcome it are discussed.
