Control of green mould on oranges by Candida oleophila and calcium treatments.

Candida oleophila, a yeast strain ID 244 which does not produce antibiotics, gave moderate control of green mould of orange (caused by Penicillium digitatum). Calcium chloride partially reduced Penicillium digitatum infection, with the effect increasing gradually with rising calcium concentration (1-2%). The calcium treatment did not enhance the growth of the antagonist or eradicate the pathogen. The control of the disease was improved greatly when calcium chloride (used at 2%) was combined with the C. oleophila (at 1x109 colony forming units/ml) which was applied to the surface wounds fruit.
