The use of solar cooling to minimize postharvest losses in the tropics.

Conventional cooling facilities for handling of fruits and vegetables in tropical countries are lacking or unreliable, therefore deterioration is fast and losses are serious. These countries receive abundant solar energy and this can be harnessed for cooling. Solar cooling systems can be used to preserve food in rural locations either by the production and distribution of ice or by the provision of large cold stores for community use. Solar energy can be converted into useful energy by either thermal or photovoltaic (PV) systems. Solar thermal systems are usually preferred because of their higher efficiencies and lower costs. Liquid and solid absorption systems are discussed along with their potential applications in rural agriculture, and previous research work on ice production and solar cooling systems is briefly reviewed.
