Effect of postharvest exposure to solar radiation on the quality of melon fruits.

At harvest, fruits of 2 melon hybrid cultivars (Gold Mine and Agroflora 646), grown in the Mossoro-Acu region, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil, were exposed to solar radiation for 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 h between 10.00 and 15.00 h, then stored for 32 days at room temperature (28.5 deg C and 67% RH). Duration of postharvest exposure to solar radiation affected none of the analysed traits: external and internal appearance, pulp firmness and soluble solids content. Gold Mine showed a significantly higher pulp firmness and better external quality than Agroflora 646, which was more susceptible to solar radiation injury.
