Influence of the processing, packing and storage conditions in the sanitary quality of peanut seeds.

Peanut [groundnut] seeds cv. Tatu were stored for 15 months in three types of container under ambient conditions in two microregions of Paraiba State, Brazil. Before storage and every three months the seeds were evaluated for microflora, damage, and the insects that caused the damage. The results demonstrated that the seeds stored out of the kernal were more susceptible to fungal infection and pest attack. The fungi identified were Aspergillus flavus, A. niger and Aspergillus spp. and the insect pests included Corcyra cephalonica, Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Laemophloeus minutus [Cryptolestes pusillus] and Lasioderma serricorne. The type of container, but not the storage place, had an influence on the incidence of fungi and insect pests.
