Postharvest quality of strawberries grown in plastic tunnels and with different types of mulch in spring/summer.

Strawberries (clone AGF-80) were grown outdoors or in plastic tunnels with or without milled sugarcane bagasse or black plastic mulch at the Federal University of Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil, from August to December 1991 (i.e during spring/summer, for out-of-season production). Fruits were analysed for total soluble solids content (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), pH, TSS:TA ratio, and contents of reducing sugars, sucrose and total sugars. Fruit quality was best in plants grown outdoors with milled sugarcane bagasse mulch; the quality of these fruits was similar to that of fruits harvested in the normal season. The quality of fruits from plants grown under plastic was low (due to low light levels) and it is concluded that out-of-season production is not feasible under plastic.
