Detection of hollow pears by tree based modelling on non-destructive acoustic response spectra.

After controlled atmosphere storage, some pears show internal breakdown and brown discoloration (due to a combination of harvesting time and storage conditions), with no external visual evidence of any internal defect. Acoustic response spectra were able to detect internal abnormalities in Conference pears. Classical numerical values (second moment, damping, frequency etc.) based on these spectra were used to identify non-marketable fruits. An additional Fourier series algorithm of the spectrum and the use of "tree based modelling" (the Classification and Regression Trees program, CART) on the coefficients yielded satisfactory results, allowing adequate identification of hollow pears. Since the protocol is based on non-destructive methods, it is suggested that it could be incorporated into a sorting line.
