World food security: the role of postharvest technology.

Agricultural development programmes generally focus on creation of high yielding, disease resistant or drought tolerant crop varieties and multiple cropping systems: only very rarely do post production considerations such as postharvest handling, storage, processing, preservation, marketing, distribution and utilization play a role in these programmes. A concerted effort is required to achieve world food availability and security through prevention of postharvest food loss. The issue is discussed covering; world food situation; rural urban growth and food security; post production food system; postharvest food losses; postharvest food system in the former USSR; role of governments in loss prevention; role of food scientists and technologists; role of international donors and corporations; and research needs and opportunities.
