Traditional rice storage in southern Guinea-Bissau: potentials, limitations and possible improvement on local methods.

Field research was performed in the south of Guinea-Bissau from November 1993 to July 1996. The main sources of storage losses for each of the ethnic groups living in the south of Guinea-Bissau are insect pests and rodents. Producers do not have any methods to quantify postharvest losses. Traditional methods of pest control in mangrove swamp rice storage include insecticides, plant materials, sealed containers, traps, sun-drying, parboiling and the use of cats as biological control agents. A framework design is proposed for a participatory ethnographic and agro-ecological approach to further study and improve traditional postharvest management of rice by the introduction of an appropriate integrated pest management programme.
