Controlled atmosphere of apples with pears.

The response to controlled atmosphere (CA) storage of Gala apples harvested at different maturities and the feasibility of storing Bartlett [Williams' Bon Chretien] pears with Gala apples were studied. Gala apples were harvested on 3 occasions (at 7-day intervals) over 3 seasons. Fruit maturity at each stage was based on background colour (green, white or yellow). Bartlett pears were obtained from a commercial packing house at the time of each apple harvest. Apples from each harvest were stored alone or with Bartlett pears, which mature at about the same time as Gala apples. After 45 and 90 days' storage, fruit quality was better in apples and pears stored in CA (1% O2 + 1% CO2, or 2% O2 + 3% CO2) than in apples and pears stored in air (all at 1 deg C). Apples and pears stored together in CA maintained better quality than apples and pears stored alone in CA. Early harvested apples and pears maintained better quality in CA storage than later harvested fruits. A combination of 45 days' CA storage

followed by 30 days' storage in air resulted in Gala apples that were superior in quality to apples stored for 75 days in air.
