The bogus debate on bioethics.

With genetic engineering, genetic barriers between species are crossed. Especially in Western countries, this phenomenon leads to ethical concerns about biotechnology and its regulation. It is argued that ethical concerns are largely a luxury of developed countries. Developing countries should not just follow the moral dilemmas of the North, but balance ethics of biotechnology against ethics of poverty. Recombinant bovine somatotropin and tomatoes with delayed postharvest softening [due to an antisense polygalacturonase gene] are seen as potentially useful in combating poor nutrition and in improving farmers' earnings in developing countries, despite some opposition to such products in developed countries. It is noted that Hinduism does not bar research on cattle.
