Thymus capitatus essential oil and carvacrol in post-harvest control of Penicillium italicum on orange fruits under vacuum conditions.

Two trials were conducted to test the fungicidal activity of T. capitatus essential oil (TEO) in comparison with its component carvacrol under vacuum conditions (0.2 bar). In the first trial, the fungitoxic activity of TEO and carvacrol against P. italicum was evaluated on discs of orange fruit peel. Vaporized TEO and carvacrol were used at the final concentrations of 0.0025, 0.005, 0.01 and 0.02% (v/v) and vacuum was maintained for 2 time intervals (4 and 8 hours). In the second trial, orange fruits were sprayed with a 105 conidia/ml spore suspension and placed in jars where they were treated using the same concentrations, time and pressure conditions as those applied in the first trial. Rinsing water used to wash fruit after the treatments was plated on PDA and a colony count was performed daily. The thyme oil and carvacrol were both completely effective at 0.02%. Different exposure times did not affect the fungicidal action. Only carvacrol altered the orange epicarp at 0.01 and 0.02%. SEM obs

ervations showed that the fungal mycelia were badly damaged by TEO application.
