Germination ecology of Bunium persicum (Boiss) Fedtsch and Ferula oopoda (Boiss and Buhse) Boiss.

With a view to improving their cultivation, studies were undertaken to determine the germination requirements of the medicinal plants B. persicum and F. oopoda with respect to: temperature, presoaking, stratification, scarification, treatment with KNO3 or thiourea, dry air treatment, ethylene gas treatment, storage, soil texture, sowing depth and soil moisture. B. persicum seeds showed 70% germination at 5 deg C, while those of F. oopoda showed 100% germination at 10 deg . Stratification improved the rate of germination (in days) of seeds of both species. Germination of B. persicum seeds improved when treated with dry air or ethylene gas (86 and 80%, respectively). Seed of B. persicum and F. oopoda stored for 2 years at room temperature exhibited 96 and 100% germination, respectively, while fresh seeds germinated in only 10% of cases. B. persicum seeds only germinated in sandy clay loam soil (40%), while F. oopoda gave 100% germination in sandy clay loam and silt loam, and 80% in loamy sand and

clay loam soils. The germination of both these species generally decreased with increasing sowing depth and soil dryness. It is concluded that seeds of both species are stenothermal with respect to their germination requirements, postharvest maturation and stratification, but dry air treatments are required. It is suggested that stored seeds are broadcast on a light textured soil with high moisture.
