The study of pathogenicity of bacteria isolated from garlic (Allium sativum L.) bulbs.

Many fungi and bacteria were isolated from the roots and cloves of 8 local ecotypes of winter garlic and 1 ecotype of spring garlic sampled from the experimental plots of the Institute of Vegetable Crops and Medical Plants of the University of Agriculture, Lublin, Poland, during 1993-95. The isolations were made both before storage and after storage for different periods under different conditions. The pathogenicity of 157 morphologically differentiated isolates of bacteria was determined by inoculation of garlic cloves. Five isolates of bacteria were pathogenic, causing necrosis and subsequent rotting of clove tissues. These isolates were identified as Erwinia carotovora and Pseudomonas marginalis on the basis of physiological and biochemical tests.
