Postharvest storage of chayote, Sechium edule L., using refrigeration, gamma-radiation with cobalt-60 and polyethylene film.

Fruits of S. edule harvested in Sao Paulo, Brazil were sorted for uniformity of size (near the average of 320 g) and either wrapped individually in polyethylene film or not wrapped before irradiation with cobalt-60 at a rate of 1370 Gy/h to give a dose of 0, 25, 50 or 75 Gy. The fruits were stored at room temperature (21 deg -23 deg C) and 65%-75% RH or at 12.0 deg -13.5 deg and 45%-55% RH. Evaluation of weight loss, acidity and concentration of total soluble solids immediately after irradiation and on 8 dates from 6-63 days after treatment showed significant differences only in weight loss under different storage conditions. Irradiation increased the shelf-life of wrapped fruits from 16 days to an average of 43 days but reduced the shelf-life of unwrapped fruits from 44 days to 24 days. Cold storage significantly increased shelf-life except in untreated and unwrapped fruits. Irradiation with 50 Gy, wrapping and cold storage resulted in the longest shelf-life (63 days).
