An integrated approach towards improving mango productivity.

The components of productivity of mangoes, such as tree vigour, nutrition and post-bloom occurrence of vegetative flush, are considered. Preponderance of flower-antagonistic and vegetative growth-promoting conditions in tropical conditions can severely curtail opportunities for mango growing. Based on the florigen and anti-florigen hypothesis, which propounds floral and vegetative cycles, a combination approach consisting of postharvest application of paclobutrazol and pre-flower pruning was developed for Kensington Pride mango for the tropical region of Australia. This has achieved regular and increased flowering and fruiting, and improved quality, especially external fruit appearance and firmness.
