The effect of acclimatization of fruits on the control of a CO2-linked disorder of Empire apples.

Empire apples develop a CO2-linked physiological scald-like disorder in storage. The effects of acclimatization of preclimacteric Empire fruits at 3 deg C in air or low O2 levels prior to elevating the CO2 concentration in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on the development of the disorder was studied. The results showed that the disorder could be effectively controlled by holding fruits at 3 deg for 3-4 weeks in 1.5-3.0% O2 without CO2 prior to CA storage in 1.5% O2 + 3.0% CO2.
