High CO2 modified atmosphere can be effective in preventing woolliness in nectarines.

In the 1995-96 season, Fantasia and Flamekist nectarines harvested from an orchard near Rancagua, Chile, were packed using different films with or without injection of CO2 at different concentrations (with nitrogen as balance gas). In the 1996-97 season, July Red, Flamekist and August Red nectarines and Calred peaches (harvested form the same orchard near Rancagua) were packed using 2 low permeability films with or without CO2 injection (with oxygen as balance gas). The fruits were cold-stored for 20 or 30 days and subsequently held for 5 days at room temperature for ripening. The fruits were evaluated for firmness and physiological disorders. In the 1995-96 season, good control of woolliness was obtained in both nectarine cultivars only in the treatments where high CO2 concentrations (above 10%) were reached. In 1996-97, a reduction in woolliness incidence was obtained in nectarines through MAP, but no control was apparent in Calred peaches. In general, high CO2 treatments resulted in less pron

ounced softening after cold storage.
