Long distance road transportation of mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Kesar.

All the fruits of a mango cv. Kesar tree grown at Navsari, Gujarat, India, were graded into 4 specific gravity groups immediately after harvest. These groups were specific gravity (1) <1; (2) 1-1.02; (3) 1.02-1.04; and (4) >1.04. The graded fruits were transported 1150 kms from Navsari (Gujarat) to New Delhi by truck in 2 types of packing (corrugated fibre board (CFB) boxes or wooden crates). In storage studies at ambient temperatures in Delhi, group 4 recorded earlier ripening (within 8 days), the lowest shelf life (10.5 days) and the lowest disease reduction index (DRI). Total soluble solids and organoleptic parameters in group 4 were inferior to those in groups 2 and 3. The fruits in group 1 did not ripen properly, suggesting that they were harvested at an immature stage. Fruits of groups 2 and 3 had the best quality fruits on ripening, suggested that they were harvested at an appropriate maturity stage. The fruits packed in CFB boxes showed reduced percentage physiological weight loss, exten

ded shelf lives and better organoleptic qualities than those stored in wooden crates.
