Quality of fresh ginseng stored at MA conditions.

Three-year-old Panax ginseng [P. pseudoginseng] roots were harvested from mid-October 1996 to early March 1997. Roots harvested in October, November and December were stored at 2 deg C for 3 months. Root quality after storage (in terms of firmness and percentage decay) was best in roots harvested in November. A sample of roots [harvesting date unspecified] was packaged in polyethylene film (0.03, 0.05 or 0.07 mm thickness) or polypropylene film (0.07 mm thickness) and stored for 5 months at 2 deg . Root quality after storage was best in roots packaged in 0.07 mm polypropylene film. Storage decay was due mainly to infection with Cylindrocarpon destructans [Nectria radicicola] and infestation with the mite Rhizoglyphus echinopus. Data are tabulated on respiratory characteristics, thermal properties and sugar contents of harvested roots. The respiration rate of fresh roots was 3.62-4.72 CO2/kg per hour at 0 deg and the initial freezing temperature was -1.8 deg .
