Evaluation of the antifungal activity of the essential oils of Monarda citriodora var. citriodora and Melaleuca alternifolia on post-harvest pathogens.

In vitro antifungal activity of the essential oils of Monarda citriodora var. citriodora and Melaleuca alternifolia was evaluated against 15 common postharvest pathogens. The main components of the essential oil of Monarda citriodora were thymol (56.9%), p-cymene (13%) and alpha -terpinene (10%). The main components of the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia were terpinen-4-ol (37.4%) and gamma -terpinene (19.4%). Both essential oils exhibited good antifungal activity both by direct contact and in the vapour phase. Monarda citriodora essential oil was generally more active than that of Melaleuca alternifolia, particularly against more rapidly growing fungal species.
