Sequential CA: effects on aphids, spider mites and cut flower vase life.

The efficacy was investigated of sequential low O2, high CO2 controlled atmosphere (CA) treatments to kill green peach aphids (Myzus persicae), melon aphids (Aphis gossypii) and diapausing two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae). The tolerance of carnation, chrysanthemum, rose and Paphiopedilum orchid flowers to sequential CA was also determined. The potential for in-transit CA disinfestation of perishable commodities is improving with innovations in marine shipping container technology. This experiment tested the feasibility of a series of 6-day sequential CA treatments to disinfest shipped cut flowers. Aphid mortality was high though not significantly different across treatments, while spider mite mortality was low, reaching a maximum of only 25% under a treatment of 0.1% O2 followed by 60% CO2, then air. Vase life was generally reduced by CA treatments, though enhanced for orchids under low O2 CA. The sequence of O2 and CO2 exposure significantly affected floral tolerance of several CA

 treatments.
