บทคัดย่อ

This article discusses the question of fruit harvesting in the citrus sector of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and evaluates whether or not the responsibility for orange harvesting is best carried out by producers or by processors of concentrated juice. A historical overview of orange harvesting is presented and the situation with regard to harvesting in other agro-industries in Brazil is reviewed. It is concluded that harvesting is better suited as an activity to be carried out by producers, and that good quality orange juice may be produced even when the responsibility for harvest and transport falls on the producers. It is suggested that this should be achieved with implementation of some changes, including: training of producers with respect to use of maturation determination equipment; greater use of implements to facilitate fruit transport; and future adoption of harvest mechanization.
