Improvement of the postharvest quality of strawberries.

A national project, involving different sectors of the strawberry industry in Finland, was initiated to study methods of improving postharvest fruit quality between 1995-97. In a study in 1995, fruit maturity at harvest had a significant effect on shelf-life. Even though the berries were precooled and cold-stored (2-5 deg C), quality was only maintained at best for 3 days. By picking the fruit at three-quarter ripeness, shelf-life was extended from 3 to 7 days. Precooling also had an effect on shelf-life and injury during transport. Using vibration to simulate transport, injuries were greater on fruit not precooled compared with precooled fruit. The effectiveness of forced air cooling could be improved using perforated packaging.
