Variables which influence the occurence of back mould (Aspergillus niger) on onion bulb in the Rio Negro valley.

The occurrence of black mould (A. niger) is the main cause of waste of stored onion bulbs in the Rio Negro valley, Argentina. The environmental variables, including patterns of crop management and their relationships with the different levels of disease incidence and severity were analysed. Different crops were subjected to regular observations, during 2 growing seasons (1991-92 and 1992-93). The recorded variables were: (1) plot characteristics, (2) crop characteristics and management, (3) postharvest handling of the product and (4) disease indices measured as incidence and severity. At the end of storage, disease incidence was related to the following variables: previous crop, drying time previous to storage and the percentage of diseased bulbs at harvest. It is concluded, therefore, that there are some crop management patterns which could modify the incidence of the disease.
