The future of CA & MA recommendations.

Specific controlled atmosphere (CA) and modified atmosphere (MA) storage recommendations are continually being published for different produce taking into account variables such as duration of exposure, temperature, season, cultivar, growing location and postharvest treatment. It is suggested that a new method for evaluating the effectiveness of the storage environment is needed and that a dynamic system for sensing the response of the commodity to the storage atmosphere is the only way to optimize quality retention. The characteristics of a dynamic indicator are that it be continuous, non-destructive, usable at a distance and capable of automation. A number of physiological parameters which could be indicators for the dynamic approach are suggested, including the anaerobic compensation point, products of anaerobic respiration, the respiratory quotient, near infra-red determinations of composition, transmission of sound through the tissue, internal or external colour or fluorescence. A dynamic f

eedback system should be developed to control the storage atmosphere rather than continually developing precise recommendations for an optimum storage atmosphere.
