Effect of method of harvesting on postharvest loss reduction and extension of shelf life of mango.

Fruits of mango cv. Kesar growing in Rahuri, India, were either hand-harvested without their stalks or were harvested with 2.5 cm stalks using 4 different harvesters developed in India (Dapoli, CISH, IIHR or IARI). The fruits were graded and packed in corrugated fibre board boxes and stored at ambient conditions (24.1-38.1 deg C and 42.2-81.3% RH). The maximum number of fruits was harvested using the Dapoli harvester (182 fruits/h), followed by CISH, IIHR and IARI harvesters and manual harvesting. Ripening and shrivelling was delayed in fruits with intact stalks. The fruits harvested by the harvesters recorded equal shelf lives of 15 days at ambient conditions, compared with 11 days for manually harvested fruits. The fruits harvested using the Dapoli, CISH, IIHR and IARI harvesters had weight losses of 13.0, 13.2, 12.3 and 13.0%, respectively, compared with 17.2% for manually harvested fruits. The spoilage of manually harvested fruits was 21.8% after 16 days of storage, compared with 0% for mech

anically harvested fruits. Fruits became infected by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] and Diplodia natalensis [Botryodiplodia theobromae] when harvested manually.
