Plant growth regulator effects on the storage and shelf-life of 'Triumph' persimmons.

The plant growth regulators paclobutrazol (PBZ) and gibberellic acid (GA3) were applied to orchards of cv. Triumph in Israel in order to extend the marketing season of the crop. Trees were either drenched with 2.0 g PBZ/tree or sprayed with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 at rates of 0.5-2.0 g PBZ/tree and sprayed with 50 mg GA3/litre. PBZ, when applied to the roots in the spring, advanced ripening by 2-3 weeks without any detrimental effect on fruit size but it accelerated postharvest deterioration of the fruit. GA3, when sprayed at least 10 days prior to harvest, delayed fruit ripening on the tree and also reduced postharvest deterioration. The postharvest deterioration of fruits by PBZ could be inhibited by subsequent treatment with GA3 thus allowing rapid ripening with extended shelf-life. There was a minimum period of one week after GA3 application before harvesting PBZ-treated fruits, to maintain fruit firmness and not cause a delay in fruit coloration.
