Postharvest diseases of date palm.

The pathogens causing postharvest diseases on popular varieties of dates at Bikaner, Rajasthan, India, were investigated. Samples were collected from 2 developmental stages, pind and doka, from the cultivars Zagloul, Khadrawy, Halawy, Shamran and Medjool. The fruits were stored in the laboratory at room temperature. Observations on disease incidence were recorded after 20, 80 and 140 days of storage. The pathogens, isolated on potato dextrose agar for identification, included Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, A. flavus and Alternaria alternata. A high infection percentage was observed in doka stage open fruits compared with fruits with a calyx end. Disease incidence on fruits after 20 days of storage was maximum in Khadrawy (66%) followed by Zagloul (64%) and Halawy (46%) with minimum infection in Shamran (6%). At this time the fruits with calyx end had a very low incidence in all cultivars. A similar trend was observed after 80 and 140 days of storage.
