Biocontrol capability of Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Pseudomonas syringae against postharvest rots of apple under semi-commercial condition.

The biocontrol capability of 2 isolates of the yeast M. pulcherrima and 1 isolate of P. syringae against postharvest rot of apple was studied under semi-commercial conditions in 8 trials in Northern Italy (3 in Valle d'Aosta and 5 in Valle Curone, Alessandria Province). The biocontrol agents were effective in significantly reducing postharvest rot especially at the highest levels of disease pressure, when Monilia, Penicillium and Botrytis rots were prevalent in the untreated control. The antagonistic microorganisms had no effect in protecting stored fruits in the presence of high incidence of Gloeosporium rot. The yeast population density on treated apple fruits comprised between 3.0 x 103 (trial 1/95) and 6.7 x 104 (trial 4/95) cells/cm2 of apple surface at the time of application and did not change significantly during 60 days of storage at 4 deg C.
