Postharvest quality characteristics of selections from the ITSC postharvest breeding programme.

Six mango [Mangifera indica] selections from the ITSC breeding programme at Nelspruit were evaluated for postharvest quality and storage potential at storage temperatures of 8 and 11 deg C. Tommy Atkins and Kensington were used as control cultivars for the early-maturing selections and Heidi for the later-maturing selections. Selection N6 had no significant postharvest quality problems. Chilling injury was a problem in Neldica fruits, whilst vascular browning and anthracnose [Glomerella cingulata] also occurred in fruit stored at 11 deg C. Chene fruit stored at 8 deg C had some vascular browning and stem end rot, but in general exhibited good postharvest qualities. Joa also had good internal fruit quality, with anthracnose infection the most important postharvest problem. Selection 8/4 suffered badly from internal browning and anthracnose. Nelpetite had very poor postharvest quality and was not considered suitable for export. Prominent lenticel damage occurred in all the selections, with Chene a

nd N6 least affected.
