Factors determining the quality of tulips.

In a study of cut flower quality, flowers of 8 cultivars from commercial crops were kept under different postharvest storage conditions before being put into water in a lighted room for observation. The different treatments affected different characteristics: leaves yellowed sooner, stem growth declined and flower longevity diminished as postharvest temperature and storage time increased. The effect on longevity was cultivar dependent. The same cultivars were also studied as "ice"-tulips. Flowers of commercial crops produced in September, October and November were compared for flower quality. The longevity of flower vase life and the colour of the leaves were different for the various harvest periods, and this was cultivar dependent.
